Luke Buchanan: Volunteering Helps Communities

Luke Buchanan is an experienced volunteer who knows how valuable local outreach efforts can be. With experience working for Habitat for Humanity, 350.org and the Spanish Education Development Center, Luke Buchanan has seen firsthand how the simple act of volunteering can have a huge impact on struggling and disadvantaged populations. He also knows how the strength and health of a community depends on the sacrifice of everyday people; people who make a serious investment of time and/or money in order to make their communities better places to live.

Luke Buchanan understands that it isn’t always easy to find the time for volunteering. People are often consumed in a myriad of problems and concerns that require a great deal of focus and attention. Luke Buchanan knows that people have often have economic and familial problems of their own, and that often times a busy professional lifestyle can seem overwhelming and highly-distracting. He also knows, however, that volunteering for a nonprofit outreach effort can be a highly rewarding experience, and that by taking a chance on something outside of your comfort zone, you may, in fact, be providing your company with indispensable support.

Luke Buchanan suggests that everyone, even busy professionals, make a concerted effort to get more involved in their communities. Even an hour every week, he says, can make a huge difference in somebody’s day. Every community, says Luke Buchanan, offers programs that encourage involvement. Committing your time to a local park clean-up effort, to serving meals at the local soup kitchen or to local educational or athletic support programs can have innumerable benefits for you and the people you are helping.

Luke Buchanan is a busy professional who continues to find the time for his community. He knows how impactful, positive and life-altering a volunteering experience can be for a community.

For a lot of people, that is one of the main attractions to keeping a personal blog. Luke Buchanan’s blog contains articles that he categorizes. “I categorize articles by news, pet adoptions, photos, politics, and Washington Sports,” describes Luke Buchanan. Needless to say, these are all subjects that are close to Luke Buchanan’s heart. As his blog grows, he says he may add more detailed categories to file things under.

“Even hardworking professionals have hobbies,” says Luke Buchanan. “Blogging is only one of the things I enjoy. People don’t seem to realize how active I really am.” When he is not updating his blog or working, Luke Buchanan can be found playing recreational sports. The sports Luke Buchanan likes best are running, tennis, and skiing.

When he was an undergrad student at Tulane University in New Orleans, Luke Buchanan worked hard as a double major. “I was interested in two areas of study and not wanting to pick between one or the other, decided to major in both knowing it meant an increased workload for myself,” says Luke Buchanan. His two areas of study were in environmental studies and communication. These are subjects that find their way into Luke Buchanan’s blog. “There are many industries in which a communications degree is useful, and I know it has helped start my career in real estate,” he says.

Luke Buchanan’s blog is only one of the ways he spends his time outside work. Professionally, Luke Buchanan is the Marketing and Operations Manager at Washington Fine Properties. As 2014 got underway, Luke Buchanan had his real estate license for nearly a year.

Luke Buchanan: Joining a Professional Organization

Luke Buchanan says joining a professional organization is a great way to advance your career. A Washington, D.C.-based real estate agent, Luke Buchanan is associated with a group of luxury real estate firms.

Luke Buchanan received his Washington, D.C. Real Estate Salesperson License in 2013, two years after graduating from Tulane University. But this accomplished young man also has a background in marketing. Luke Buchanan has been a member of the American Marketing Association since 2011. This organization has opened many doors for Luke Buchanan, providing him with a competitive edge in the marketing industry.

One reason Luke Buchanan recommends joining a professional organization is that it is a great way to network. When you attend organization meetings you are able to interact with a wide range of peers and colleagues at varying points in their careers and are working with a variety of countries. In today’s economy, jobs often open up only to those who already have connections. Luke Buchanan sees professional organization meetings as precisely the place where career advancement begins.

Another reason Luke Buchanan believes in joining professional organizations is that they offer opportunities for continuing his education. To truly hone your skills as a professional, Luke Buchanan believes you should attend as many continuing education programs as possible. Every class offers some new insight into the workings of your industry that can help you get ahead of your competitor. Having new and up-to-date credentials can also help you to advance within your industry.

Luke Buchanan also sees joining a professional organization as a way to make friends with people whom you have something in common with. Being able to talk about work is a great icebreaker, Luke Buchanan finds. From there, it can be easy to build meaningful friendships that extend beyond the professional realm. Professional societies often offer social events for just this reason.

Luke Buchanan: Why College Students Should Join a Fraternity

During his time at Tulane University, Luke Buchanan belonged to the Tau Upsilon chapter of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Sigma Alpha Epsilon is one of the oldest fraternities at Tulane, having been founded in 1897. The national fraternity got its start in Alabama, way back in 1856, and today boasts more than 307,000 initiated members.

Luke Buchanan served as the President of the Tulane chapter’s 2007 Pledge Class. Luke Buchanan found that membership with a fraternity suited him well: it was a fun and fulfilling experience, and he encourages other young men to consider this option as they embark on their college careers.
One of the best reasons to join a fraternity, Luke Buchanan says, is social. It can serve as a smaller, more familiar community within the larger college or university. It is easy for first-year students to become overwhelmed by all the new people and experiences. Joining a fraternity allowed Luke Buchanan to make close connections with a group of young men who shared his values. Luke Buchanan says a fraternity affiliation is also useful for finding a mentor in the academic or professional world who can help you to navigate college and work life.

Luke Buchanan says there is a far more pragmatic reason for young men to join fraternities, and that is its network of alumni. Since graduating in 2011, Luke Buchanan has drawn on the brotherhood of Sigma Alpha Epsilon alumni for friendship and professional support. Luke Buchanan recommends always mentioning your fraternity affiliation in employment situations because of the camaraderie born of shared fraternity membership.

According to Luke Buchanan, joining a fraternity is also a powerful skill building experience, particularly when it comes to things like time management, event planning, and accounting. There is a lot to keep track of when you are among the leadership of an organization like Sigma Alpha Epsilon, explains Luke Buchanan, and the skills born of organizing both the day to day and special events will serve you well in life outside the university.
